Education Support Project

The aim of this project is to socially integrate and combat the social exclusion of Roma children and youth, age 8-25 years old. In order to achieve this aim the Education Support Worker provides support, advice and advocacy for Roma children, enabling them to access and succeed within primary, secondary, further education and vocational training. The project worker also works closely with Roma parents so as to facilitate comprehensive communication between parents, school authorities, teachers and children. The project has established strong links with education authorities, mainly Travellers Education Services and has collaborated in delivering workshops in primary and secondary schools. The aim of these workshops is to promote an understanding of Roma culture and history while combating bullying and anti-Roma prejudice amongst school children.

Roma Community Cohesion Project

The main aim of this project is to contribute to achieving community cohesion by working in some schools in L.B. Newham. The project creates opportunities for young Roma to interact and engage with non-Roma pupils from different ethnic backgrounds, whilst promoting values of tolerance and respect between communities.

Pupils are encouraged to learn about Roma culture and share aspects of their own culture. The project enhances school attendance and academic performance of Roma pupils through inspiring activities such as sport, art, music, media, etc. the Project Worker also liaisons with and advocates Roma parents regarding issues related to their children’s education, hence enhancing their understanding of British education system.
