Mishto Pledge for Local Authorities

Local authorities play a key role in ensuring communities are safe and can thrive.

Some communities, such as Roma, find it harder to engage with the services and opportunities offered by local authorities. To remove the barriers experienced by Roma, in housing and child protection in particular, and to enable fair access to services we need to collaborate more effectively.

We appreciate the efforts local authorities are already making to improve the situation for Roma, and thank you for taking the time to read about the Mishto campaign.

To support local authorities committing to the campaign, we have developed the Mishto Pledge for Local Authorities and Mishto Guidance for Housing and Child Protection Services. Please click the images below to read the resources and/or share them with those who can make things happen.

Further information for Local Authorities

How can a local authority sign the mishto pledge?
Local authorities should send the following details to Mihai Bica of Roma Support Group at [email protected]:
  • A link to a public statement by a local authority representative expressing their commitment to the pledge indicating actions completed or planned which contribute to the Mishto Campaign aims. This can be done through the local authority website or social media accounts.
  • Contact details of a named contact person.
  • Local authority social media handles.
What happens after a local authority signs the mishto pledge?
After signing:
  • The local authority will be named on the list of Mishto Local Authorities on this page.
  • The local authority will be offered a Mishto Local Authority Certificate and be granted permission to use this publicly.
  • The local authority will be provided with the Mishto Campaign Logo and be granted permission to use this publicly.
  • The local authority named contact or other contact as relevant will be invited to join the Roma Rights Forum quarterly meetings.

When able to demonstrate significant progress towards the Mishto Pledge commitments:
  • The local authority will be provided with the Mishto Quality Mark logo and granted permission to use this publicly.
(This can be immediately after signing the pledge if the local authority has already put in place measures as stated in the Mishto Pledge, or at a later stage when the local authority has made significant progress towards the Mishto Pledge commitments.)

After the first year:
  • After the first year the named contact person will be asked to fill in two online surveys for campaign monitoring purposes. One survey will be for the housing department and one for the local children services. These can be filled in by other relevant persons.
