The Education Support Project aims to combat the social exclusion and increase academic attainment of Roma children and youth, age 8-25 years old from six London boroughs. In order to achieve these aims two Education Support Workers provide support, advice and advocacy for over 100 Roma children and young people, enabling them to access and succeed within primary, secondary, further education and vocational training. This includes:
Education Support Workers were also involved in disseminating their good practice on working with Roma children and young people amongst other professionals through delivering presentations and participating in seminars and conferences. Last year these included: a workshop at the conference The Big Issue for Roma: Exclusion or Engagement?; a presentation at the Redbridge Race and Refugee Forum; a seminar at the conference organised by the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain; a presentation to the All Parties Parliamentary Group on Gypsy, Roma, Travellers’ issues at the House of Commons; a presentation for EMA co-coordinators in L.B. Newham; a presentation during the Travellers Aid Trust’s Panel Review at the House of Commons; a presentation to over 50 professionals working in L.B. Enfield, etc.
We run Mentoring Schemes through our dedicated team of volunteers who offer one-to-one support to Roma children and youth by delivering home tuition, emotional support and guidance and liaison with schools and other relevant organisations involved.
- helping with school registration and transition
- addressing truancy, challenging behavior and exclusion
- negotiating supplementary teaching support
- supporting children, who are bullied or subject to anti-Gypsy racism in schools
- referring beneficiaries to after-school activities
