Background to Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month

Since 2008, Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month (GRTHM) has celebrated the diverse cultures of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. The GRTHM started in London Borough of Brent in 2001, was endorsed by Parliament in 2007 and has been celebrated nationally in June since 2008.

- Promote knowledge of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History, Culture and Heritage;
- Disseminate information on positive Gypsy, Roma and Traveller contributions to British Society;
- Heighten the confidence and awareness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people to their cultural heritage;
- Celebrate Gypsy, Roma and Traveller culture and heritage.
Celebrating Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month
Schools, libraries, community groups and other organisations celebrate Gypsy, Roma and Traveller history and heritage over the month of June by organising various events across the UK.
We have created a resource pack for schools and other professionals--for example foster carers, third sector organisations and adoptive families. This contains information about the GRT History Month with Educational and Inspirational resources which can be used to support children in learning about Roma culture and history and create an artwork for our annual Art Competition.
