RSG project with Newham Council supporting the Roma community to 'Stay settled in Newham'
EU/EEA citizens and their family members were required to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) by 30 June 2021 to secure their immigration status after Brexit. Roma people were among the EU citizens most at risk of not applying by the deadline, especially more vulnerable groups such as children supported by the care system and rough sleepers.
Roma Support Group worked with Newham Council and the 'Stay settled in Newham' consortium of community organisations on a project to reach EU citizens at risk of not applying for settled status. The project included events, outreach and marketing to EU/EEA citizens, and informing local authority employees and decision-makers.
Roma Support Group has worked with the Roma community in Newham for over twenty years, and has been able to quickly mobilise trusted advocates and organise outreach activities in community languages aimed at hard to reach parts of the community. We have also contributed with expertise on the EU Settlement Scheme and advice on targeted communications. Newham Council's involvement in this project showed a welcome recognition of Roma migrants as a valued part of the borough, contributing to its economy and cultural diversity.
We concluded our work on this project at the end of October 2021. outreaching over 800 Roma people through our face-to-face activities and have supported 86 people to submit EUSS applications.
The Roma community continue to need advice and support on the EU settlement scheme beyond 30 June 2021, and we hope to continue collaboration with local partners to ensure all members of the Roma community are able to continue their lives in the UK as before.
